Curriculum

Notebook

In 8th grade, we focus heavily on nonfiction texts that push students to think about how their society has developed and continues to do so. Students will listen to, read, write, and talk about race, nutrition, socioeconomics, mental & physical health, and more. Students will also indulge in fiction texts of their choice during 1 or 2 Independent Novel units throughout the year. This year 8th grade scholars will begin fine-tuning transferable skills such as close reading a text, research, and public speaking. Please see syllabus for "Year at a Glance" look of the 8th grade curriculum.

Expectations

Black and White Up Arrow

In 8th grade ELA students are expected to adhere to TAG's PREPP traits and be role models for their younger schoolmates. Along with exuding the PREPP traits, 8th grade scholars are expected to carry themselves with academic integrity, be prepared, and take care of their technology.

Grading

Speech Bubble A+

Students will receive approximately 3 -5 grades per week. If students have questions, comments, or concerns about their grades they can request a conversation before or after class ONLY.  Students can also choose to stay after school to discuss their grades more in depth. No late work will be accepted. Students have one day after each day absent to turn in missed work before it is considered late. Please see syllabus for grading break down.

Student & Family Engagement

This year scholars will be called upon multiple times to retrieve comments, thoughts, and knowledge from family members. We will use this as a method of leveraging knowledge from all of the teachers in our lives.

Please always ask your scholar about their ELA class, as they receive homework at least 4 times a week. They will need a lot of reminders on staying organized and keeping track of their work. Any help our scholars can get on the family side will be very helpful to them in the classroom!

Meet Ms. Clarke

Hello 8th grade families!

My name is Janelle Clarke and the 2018 school year is my 3rd year at Chestnut Talented & Gifted Middle School. In my English class scholars are pushed beyond what they think they can do. We work to read, write, think, and articulate ourselves better than we have in the past. This sometimes feels very difficult and uncomfortable for scholars. However, with a positive attitude, support from one another, and perseverance we will make it through this year of growth and learning. The goal is that 8th grade scholars enter their freshman year of high school confident and sure of their language skills. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me via email or through your scholar's Remind messenger.
